Being confident

 

"Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." (NIV)

Context and Background

This verse is part of Paul's letter to the Philippians, a church he had a deep and affectionate relationship with. 1. Confidence in God's Work:

Paul begins the verse with a statement of confidence: "Being confident of this very thing." This confidence is not based on human ability or effort but on God's character and faithfulness. Paul is certain that what God starts, He finishes. This assurance comes from knowing God's nature as one who is faithful and consistent in His actions.

2. The Good Work:

The "good work" refers to the work of salvation and sanctification. It is the process by which God transforms believers into the image of Christ. This begins at the moment of conversion when a person places their faith in Jesus and continues throughout their life as they grow in spiritual maturity. The good work also encompasses the specific calling and purpose God has for each believer, which He will bring to fulfillment.

3. God as the Initiator and Completer:

Paul emphasizes that it is God who "began a good work in you" and who will "carry it on to completion." This highlights the divine initiative in the process of salvation. It is God who calls, justifies, sanctifies, and ultimately glorifies the believer. The believer's security and growth are not based on their own strength but on God's unchanging commitment.

4. Until the Day of Christ Jesus:

The phrase "until the day of Christ Jesus" refers to the return of Christ and the final consummation of all things. Paul is pointing forward to the ultimate fulfillment of God's work in the believer when Christ returns. This completion will be seen in the full redemption of the believer—spirit, soul, and body—and the establishment of God's kingdom in its fullness.

Application

Philippians 1:6 is a source of great encouragement for believers. It reminds them that their spiritual journey, though it may have ups and downs, is securely in God's hands. God's faithfulness guarantees that He will bring to completion the work He has started. This verse encourages believers to trust in God's timing and process, even when they don't see immediate results. It also reassures them that their future is secure, as it is anchored in the promise of Christ's return.

In moments of doubt or struggle, believers can return to this verse as a reminder that God's purposes for their lives will not be thwarted. It is a call to perseverance, knowing that God is both the author and finisher of their faith.
