Born Again


Being born again is one of the most profound truths in the Christian faith. It describes the moment when God brings a person from spiritual death into spiritual life. Jesus spoke of this in John 3 when He told Nicodemus, “You must be born again.” This new birth is not physical, nor is it something we can produce by our own effort. It is a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit, who opens our eyes to our need for salvation and awakens our hearts to believe in Christ. In this moment, God gives us a new beginning—one not built on our past failures, but on His grace.

To be born again means receiving a new heart. Scripture says that God removes the heart of stone and gives a heart of flesh—one that desires Him, seeks Him, and loves Him. Before this new birth, we may hear the things of God, yet they seem distant or confusing. After being born again, the Word of God becomes alive, and our desires begin to change. The things we once loved no longer satisfy, and the things of God, which once seemed unimportant, become precious. This transformation is not about religion or rituals; it is about God’s Spirit making us truly alive.

This new birth also brings a new identity. When we are born again, we become children of God, adopted into His family, and given the full rights of sons and daughters. We are no longer defined by sin, shame, or the old life we once lived. Instead, we are covered by Christ’s righteousness, forgiven of every sin, and welcomed into God’s kingdom. The burdens of guilt and fear begin to lift because we now belong to the One who has conquered sin and death. Our identity is rooted not in what we have done, but in who Christ is and what He has done for us.

Being born again leads to a new way of living. The Holy Spirit begins to shape our choices, guide our thoughts, and produce His fruit in our lives—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and more. We grow in holiness not by our own strength but by God’s power working within us. The new birth begins a lifelong journey of transformation, where we continually become more like Christ. This does not mean perfection, but it does mean progress—step by step, day by day, walking in the light of God’s grace.

Finally, being born again brings a new hope. Those who are born again have eternal life—a life that begins now and continues forever in the presence of God. The fear of death is replaced with assurance, because we know that Christ has prepared a place for us. Our future is secure, not because of anything we have achieved, but because we have been made new by God Himself. This hope gives strength in trials, peace in uncertainty, and joy that does not fade. To be born again is the greatest gift a person can receive—a gift that transforms the heart, the mind, the life, and the eternal destiny of all who come to Jesus Christ.

The Lord is a strong tower and refused.
